about us
The race
100 universities and colleges race wheel-to-wheel in a grueling four-hour endurance race over rocks, jumps, mud pits and other obstacles designed to push the vehicles’ limits.
Founded in 2011, the team has designed, manufactured, and competed annually at Baja SAE competitions across the continent. At the end of each academic year, our team competes internationally in the Baja SAE collegiate design series. Organized by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) and taking place in the United States, these intercollegiate competitions take place over four days. There are an array of events to be judged in; scores are based on the team’s engineering design, business presentation and vehicle performance on the track over punishing terrain.
The Design and build Experience
Join one of our four subteams below:
- Chassis & Driver Controls - The chassis & driver controls subteam is responsible for operator controls, ergonomics, frame design, and bridging the scope between all other subteams. Projects are highly interdisciplinary and vary widely in complexity, providing member with the opportunity to utilize all their skills. Members can expect to develop knowledge in a range of field including mechanical design & optimization, CNC & manual machining, and advanced composite fabrication. Design projects have included design of the steel frame with torsional rigidity analysis, ergonomic carbon fibre steering wheel and seat, throttle & brake pedals, body panels, and more.
- Mechatronics - This subteam oversees the design, manufacture, control and analysis of mechatronic and electronic automotive systems in addition to collecting and analysing vehicle data. In doing so we utilize advanced software for 3D modelling, programming, software development and data analysis. We also work hands on with power distribution systems, wire harnesses, data acquisition systems, custom sensors/boards, mechanical parts and assemblies, industrial machining equipment and much more! Other subteams also rely on our expertise to support electrification and testing efforts along the way.
- Suspension & Steering - The suspension subteam is directly concerned with how the vehicle rides and handles. Parts we work on include linkages such as the control arms at the front, and trailing arms in the rear, the shocks, uprights, steering rack etc. The Suspension team is a great opportunity to learn about vehicle dynamics, 3D CAD Modelling, structural design and design optimizations through Finite Element Analyses, Sheet Metal design, and a variety of practical hands-on skills like mill and lathe work, and welding. If any of these sounds interesting to you, be sure to get in touch with us!
- Drivetrain - The drivetrain subteam specializes in transferring power from the motor to the wheels. Our focus lies on the engine, gearing, and transmission as well as hubs, drive shafts and CV joints. Our team members design and optimize parts, perform stress and thermal analysis, collect and analyze data, and conduct hands on testing. We are passionate about what we do and have ambitious projects lined up for this year. Currently, we are looking for members of all experience levels, so if you are interested in learning about or have experience in mechanical design, power transmission, and dynamic testing talk to us today!
